Message from Mr Moustafa Elakkoumi

Asalaamu alaikum parents and guardians,
The school philosophy has changed with the new strategic plan. It reads:
‘At the Australian International Academy of Education Inc. (AIAE), every child is valued as a unique individual who deserves a secure, caring, and stimulating environment to develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially.
The Academy fosters a global perspective, encouraging students to broaden their horizons with tolerance, compassion, and cooperation. AIAE actively promotes inclusivity, striving to eliminate unjust discrimination based on religion, race, or culture across all aspects of school life. With a focus on spiritual excellence and goodness, the Academy aligns its mission with values of piety and knowledge, aspiring to serve and nurture its students holistically.’
It is very important for all stakeholders involved in AIAE to understand the direction and focus of the next 5 years. We are striving to produce emotionally intelligent students who are well grounded in Islamic understanding and academic knowledge.
DROP OFF TERM TWO As we move to become a safer school a change to drop off procedures will be implemented in Term Two.
The new procedures will include:
The drop and go area will be at Gate 2 on Ross Street.
Parents are required to leave school grounds as students enter.
Until we finalise our online canteen system, parents must prepare a lunch order from home. Parents will have limited access to the canteen and no access after an online platform has been implemented.
Gate 2 will open at 8 am and close at 8:50am. Students should arrive after 8.15am because there is no active supervision before 8:15am.
All parents who arrive after 8:50am will need to proceed to the front office.
Parents or Visitors will not be allowed to walk through Gate 2 on Ross Street and walk through the school grounds to go to the office. Please enter through the Gate 8 on Rogers Street to enter the front office.
Parents must report to the front office to make appointments to see a staff member.
Please familiarise yourself with the routine. If there are any issues, we ask parents and guardians to enter through the office.
We thank you in advance for your commitment and understanding.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Eid Al-Fitr Mubarak to all our families!
As we move through an exciting term of learning in the LOTE Arabic program, we are delighted to share some highlights from our Foundation to Year 5 classes. This term, we have been exploring the cultural and linguistic significance of Ramadan, a special time for millions of people around the world
Students across all year levels have been engaging in interactive lessons about the holy month of Ramadan. Through storytelling, art, and language activities, students have expanded their Arabic vocabulary and deepened their understanding of cultural traditions.
Year 5 Iftar Night Celebration
One of the most exciting events this term was our Iftar Night, where students and staff came together to experience the joy of breaking fast. The evening was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the spirit of togetherness.
Highlights from the event included:
- Student presentations: Our young learners shared what they had learned about Ramadan, showcasing their Arabic skills.
- Arabic reflections: Following Iftar Night, students engaged in reflective writing in Arabic about their experiences, describing what they did during Iftar night.
The night was a beautiful reminder of the importance of cultural appreciation and unity within our school community.
We are also thrilled to share some exciting moments from our Year 2 Arabic class! The students enthusiastically participated in a hands-on activity where they sorted the family members' words under هذا و هذه (e.g., هذه أم،هذا أب، هذا أخ). They also practiced joining Arabic letters to form words. It was truly inspiring to see their focus, creativity, and joy as they built their language skills.
These activities not only enhance their Arabic proficiency but also foster a deeper connection to their culture.

Religion

Assalamu Alaikum Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are thrilled to share the exciting events planned for this term, each thoughtfully organized by the AIA Islamic Department to celebrate and strengthen our school’s Islamic identity. These initiatives are designed to inspire our students spiritually, academically, and creatively, fostering a deep connection to their faith and community. Through these events, we aim to create meaningful experiences that not only enrich their understanding of Islam but also instill a sense of pride and belonging in their hearts.
- Pre-Ramadan Assembly:
Earlier this term, the Islamic Department organized a special assembly to prepare our students for the blessed month of Ramadan. We were honored to host an Imam who shared valuable insights on the significance of Ramadan and how to spiritually and practically prepare for it. During the assembly, the Head of the Islamic Department awarded certificates to students who completed Juz’ Amma and those who mastered the 6 Iqra Books. This celebration of their achievements set a positive tone for the month ahead, reminding students of the importance of dedication and perseverance in their Quranic journey. - Year 5 & SCR Iftar Night:
In a beautiful display of community spirit, the Islamic Department hosted an Iftar night for Year 5 students and the School Community Representatives (SCR). Held in the school hall, this event brought together students, staff, and families to break their fast, share a meal, and strengthen bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. The evening was filled with heartfelt conversations, prayers, and a sense of unity that truly embodied the spirit of Ramadan. - Quran Competition:
( وَفِي ذَلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ )
Our Quran Competition was a heartwarming event that showcased the dedication of our young learners. It was truly inspiring to see our students compete in memorizing and reciting the Quran with confidence and love for the holy book. The competition not only highlighted their hard work but also reinforced the importance of connecting with the Quran as a source of guidance and peace. Winners and awards will be announced soon, Insha’Allah—stay tuned! - Ramadan Decoration Competition:
The Ramadan Decoration Competition is currently underway, encouraging students to express their creativity and teamwork while celebrating the values of Ramadan. Classrooms are being transformed with beautiful artwork, Quranic verses, and symbols reflecting themes of generosity, prayer, and unity. It has been incredible to witness the collaboration between all teachers and students across all subjects, highlighting the spirit of this holy month. This initiative not only beautifies our school but also serves as a daily reminder of the blessings and lessons of Ramadan. - Special Ramadan Fridays:
To further embrace the blessings of Ramadan, AIA has introduced special Friday events throughout the month. Students are encouraged to wear their Abayas and Jilbabs to school, fostering a sense of Islamic pride and unity. These Fridays are marked by additional spiritual activities, such as Quran recitation circles, Islamic storytelling, and reflections on the virtues of Ramadan, creating a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere in our school.
These events reflect the dedication of the AIA Islamic Department and our collective commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals who are deeply connected to their faith and community. We are grateful for the unwavering support of our staff, students, and families in making these initiatives a success.
Jazakum Allah khair for your continued partnership, and may this Ramadan be a source of blessings, growth, and spiritual renewal for us all.
AIA Islamic Department

Online Safety and Reducing Screen Time at Home
Salam Parents and Carers,
In today’s digital world, screens are everywhere—from TVs to tablets, gaming consoles to smartphones. While technology has many benefits, too much screen time can impact your child’s development, sleep, and overall well-being.
Why Reduce Screen Time?
Excessive screen time can lead to:
- Reduced attention span and concentration
- Less physical activity, affecting overall health
- Disrupted sleep, especially when using screens before bedtime
- Less time for creative play and family bonding
- Encouraging a balance between screen time and other activities, such as reading, outdoor play, and hands-on learning, supports healthy development and social skills.
Online Safety: Keeping Your Child Safe
As children spend more time online, it’s crucial to protect them from risks such as inappropriate content, online strangers, and cyberbullying. Here’s what you can do:
· Supervise online activities – Keep screens in shared areas and use parental controls.
· Talk about online safety – Remind your child to only talk to people they know and never share personal information, such as the name of their school, address or passwords etc.
· Set clear boundaries – Agree on screen time limits and explain why they are important.
· Encourage safe, age-appropriate content – Use child-friendly apps and websites designed for learning.
By promoting a healthy balance and creating a safe digital environment, we can help our children develop positive online habits while protecting them from potential dangers.

Library

We’ve had a fun time in the library so far this year! All classes have been listening to stories or novels and have had the opportunity to borrow. The library staff have been busy creating displays to engage the students in literacy and encourage borrowing.
Please ensure that your child has a library bag with their name clearly visible so they can borrow from the many wonderful books from our library to read at home. Library bags can be purchased from the uniform shop. Click here for the direct link to the library bag. As each child has their own unique barcode, siblings cannot share the same library bag.
The library will be open on Friday April 4 during parent/teacher/student goal setting day. Please come in and say hello! You are also welcome to return any outstanding library books at this time.
Happy reading!

Welcoming Ramadan
Students became creative in the art room as we designed beautiful backdrops to be used for inspirational quotes/ hadeeths and ayat from the Quran about the blessed month of Ramadan.
To celebrate its commencement, we provided all of our members a small gift to benefit them during this special month.
Feed the homeless
On Sunday the 23rd of March, AIA Coburg Primary Campus students, parents and staff had the pleasure of attending and supporting Inspiring Connections yearly charity iftar for the homeless. The lovely founders of the organisation, Nilufer and Zuhre, were a pleasure to work alongside. The work they do for the poorest in our community is enviable. It was a lovely evening spent in the beautiful Flagstaff Gardens precinct.
There were members from various organisations as well as hardworking volunteers all coming together to make a difference in our community.
A big thankyou to KKCC Principle, Mr. Moustafa and our students Ayesha and Semir as well as their parents for the amazing help and care they provided for the less privileged members of our community on that special day.
May Allah (swt) reward everyone for their efforts inshaAllah.
Tarteel excursion
Just as the Holy month of Ramadan was approaching, our dear SRC members were invited to partake once again in the Tarteel Eid Lolly drive. The students attended the Tarteel headquarters and gathered immense reward by packing lolly bags to be distributed to the children at the many masajid after the Eid prayer insha Allah.
It was a joyous event for all alhamdulillah. May Allah reward all the children and Ms. Fathima for organising this initiative.
Harmony Day celebrations
Harmony Day was celebrated with a bright array of colours and beautiful outfits this year. Our amazing culturally diverse students put on a beautiful display showcasing the beauty of Islam and the importance of belonging throughout the day. Children undertook activities during class time reflecting on who we are and what roles we play within our community.

PSPE

As we move into the second half of the term, the Physical Education team has been focusing on developing personal and social skills through various activities that emphasize teamwork, sportsmanship, and cooperation. We believe that physical education is not just about improving physical fitness it's also an opportunity to nurture important life skills that students will carry with them both in and out of the classroom.
In the upper primary years, students have been engaged in team-building exercises and activities designed to strengthen their understanding of sportsmanship. Through games, students are developing the value of communication, problem-solving, and trust within a team. Through modified games students are faced with challenges and setbacks in sports while maintaining a positive attitude.
For our younger students, the focus has been on following the rules of physical education and learning how to work cooperatively with others. These foundational skills are essential in developing positive attitudes towards physical activity and are key to fostering a respectful and enjoyable environment in PE classes.
Through simple games and activities, the students are learning how to listen, follow instructions, and take turns. We have been encouraging them to communicate with their peers, share equipment, and respect personal space. These early lessons in cooperation help create a strong foundation for their future participation in sports and physical activities.
We are excited to see how the students are growing in these areas and are looking forward to the continued development of these important social and personal skills throughout the remainder of the term.

Visual Art

Salaam!
This term has flown by so fast and all year levels have been busy completing their art projects for Term One, some of which will continue into the beginning of Term Two.
I wanted to share the beautiful artwork done by our lovely Year Twos. They have been learning about Vincent Van Gogh and his unique painting style. Students have learned that he used short swirling strokes to build up his painting and make it look expressive and unique.
We started with vases of fresh sunflowers in the Art Room and students tried their best to draw what they could see in front of them, just like Van Gogh did! They used oil pastels to add details in short swirling strokes. Finally, they added some water colour paint to brighten up and complete their artwork. An amazing effort from all Year Twos! I can’t wait to have their artwork displayed around the school!
The Year Fours have been following the design process as we brainstorm, plan and refine our ideas for a Yayoi Kusama inspired flower sculpture. We have learned that it is a long planning process, but we will inshaAllah, begin making our sculptures next term. The Kusama exhibit is still ongoing at NGV until the end of April if anyone wants to visit over the holidays.
I have been so proud of the effort shown by Year Fives while creating beautiful tessellating tiles during our Islamic Art unit. I am especially excited for them to be done so that they can be displayed!
Hoping everyone has a wonderful and safe Term 1 break!

Performing Arts

We have started the year with enthusiasm and productivity. Term 1 has been mostly focusing on spatial awareness and social interaction games to build cooperation, positive relationships in the classroom, confidence, Safe Practice and establishing protocols in the Performing Arts Space.
Foundation- Year 2 focused on establishing spatial awareness, listening and responding skills through movement, creative play, playing instruments and interactive drama games using role play and characterisation.
Year 3 and 4 likewise established spatial awareness, listening and responding skills through movement and interactive drama games using role play and characterisation through exploring mime. Year 4s auditioned for main characters for the production to build a real-life experience which required focus, diligence, patience and dedication. This year 88 students auditioned for roles.
Year 5’s have been exploring Broadcast Media. The focus was on planning, developing, filming and editing a Media/News Report based on Civilians and Communities, the Unit of Inquiry established in the classroom. They had to consider; Theme, Setting, Characters, Roles and Responsibilities, Costumes, Props, script writing and editing on the ipads.
Foundation, Year 2 and Year 4 started briefly with the production item they will be performing in Term 3. The production this year is called “A journey through art” which explores the Transdisciplinary themes- Who we are, Sharing the Planet and Where we are in Place and Time as well as a transdisciplinary approach to not only the story but through the characters. Every subject area has been included in the script and story. Therefore, the curriculum has been embedded within the structure and format of the play. A teacher sets a task to her students of developing an artwork that represents who they are. This sets them on an adventure to a library and an art gallery which the class acts as paintings coming to life.
Foundation students are exploring animal characters through various habitat scenes; The Savannah (Lion King), Artic (Happy feet), Jungle (Jungle book) and Ocean animals (Under the sea). Year 2 classes are exploring Indigenous cultures and their connection to nature such as; First Nations Australia, Africa, Native America and Polynesia. Year 4 students are exploring various cultures and cultural identity and traditions from across time and across the globe such as Ancient Arabia, Ancient Greece, France, Japan and Spain.
The Year 1, 3 and 5 students will participate in the Arabic Nasheed concert.

Foundation

Assalam wa alaykum parents,
I hope this newsletter finds you well! We have had an exciting couple of weeks in Foundation, filled with engaging activities that connect deeply with our current PYP Transdisciplinary Themes. I would like to take this opportunity to share some of the highlights of our recent Foundation Family Day Picnic and our Mindful Monkey Incursion.
Foundation students had a fantastic experience with the Mindful Monkey Incursion, which directly connected with our first Unit of Inquiry, ‘How We Express Ourselves’. This incursion was a unique opportunity for the students to explore the important concept of identifying and expressing their emotions and feelings.
Through interactive and engaging activities, the children learned mindfulness techniques to help them recognise their emotions, name them and express them in a healthy way. The Mindful Monkey program focused on how emotions play a vital role in our daily lives and how being mindful can help us regulate and express those feelings in a positive manner. It was a great opportunity for the children to connect with their emotions and understand that it's okay to feel a range of feelings and that expressing them is part of being human.
The students were equipped with a range of strategies to deal with their emotions, including deep breathing exercises, using calming words and recognising physical cues when they feel certain emotions arise. Foundation students also practised identifying different emotions through playful activities, including role-playing scenarios and mindfulness games, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of how to cope with feelings like frustration, excitement, and sadness. This was a valuable learning experience, helping students to feel more confident in managing their emotions both in the classroom and at home.
Our Foundation Family Day Picnic was a wonderful event that brought together our families and the wider school community to celebrate the beginning of our new school year. The picnic was not only an opportunity for families to connect and enjoy some quality time together, but it also served as an introduction to our second Unit of Inquiry for the year, ‘Who We Are.’
During the picnic, students had the chance to reflect on the concept of identity, where they come from, and the different roles they play in their families and communities. As part of the activities, we explored the importance of belonging, understanding ourselves and others, and how we can celebrate our unique qualities.
We had a wonderful time watching the children engage with their peers and families, showing a sense of connection and understanding in line with the central idea of our Unit of Inquiry. It was a beautiful way to start the year and set the tone for exploration, self-awareness and community.
Both the Family Day Picnic and the Mindful Monkey Incursion have been wonderful ways to integrate the PYP framework into our classroom experiences, providing the children with a strong foundation for the inquiry process while fostering important life skills such as self-awareness and emotional regulation.
We look forward to more opportunities for inquiry, expression and self-discovery as the year progresses.Thank you for your continued support in making these experiences possible. We appreciate your involvement and look forward to many more shared moments in the upcoming months.
Warm regards,
Foundation Teachers 2025

Year 1

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
Proud to Be Me! - A Fun and Educational Experience for Our Students!
Recently, our school had the exciting opportunity to participate in an incredible incursion titled Proud to Be Me! This highly engaging performance, hosted by Justin Credible’s Fantastic Funfair, brought a unique and interactive experience for all our students. The show featured a delightful cast of characters, including a high-flying black cockatoo, a super duck, a brilliant bear, hilarious clowns, and whimsical fairies, all coming together to teach our students valuable life lessons.
The performance centred around the importance of self-esteem, confidence, and embracing our differences, encouraging students to reflect on their own strengths and abilities. Proud to Be Me! emphasized the power of acceptance and diversity, showing students how to appreciate their own unique qualities and how to value and respect the differences in others.
Throughout the show, our students were entertained while also learning about the importance of friendship, cooperation, and teamwork. The performance encouraged everyone to recognize the significance of self-expression and how embracing one’s individuality is key to personal growth and success.
Our Year One students were especially engaged and thoroughly enjoyed the incursion. They actively participated in the performance, laughed along with the hilarious characters, and took away key messages about confidence and celebrating their own unique qualities. It was wonderful to see them so excited and involved throughout the event!
What made the experience even more special was its educational value. The performance was carefully designed to align with the Curriculum, incorporating lessons about self-confidence, reading, literature, and more. Students were able to actively engage with the performance, participate in activities, and reflect on the positive messages presented, making it a fun and meaningful learning experience.
The Proud to Be Me! the incursion was not only a fun-filled day of laughter and joy but also an inspiring reminder of how important it is to embrace who we are and support others in doing the same. It was a memorable experience that our students will carry with them for years to come!
Warm regards,
Year 1 Team

Year 2

Salam Parents,
As children progress through Year 2, they build upon the crucial literacy foundations set in earlier years. Two key literacy skills that play a significant role in their academic and personal development are handwriting and phonics.
Handwriting is more than just putting pen to paper; it is a critical skill that supports cognitive development, fine motor skills, and memory retention. Research shows that children who engage in regular handwriting practice develops stronger reading and writing abilities. Writing by hand activates areas of the brain responsible for language and comprehension, reinforcing what children learn in the classroom.
Phonics instruction is the foundation of early reading and spelling. By understanding the relationship between sounds and letters, children develop the ability to decode unfamiliar words, improving their reading fluency and confidence.
In Year 2, phonics lessons build upon prior knowledge, introducing more complex sound patterns, alternative spellings, and tricky words that don’t follow regular phonetic rules. A strong grasp of phonics enables children to become independent readers and writers, fostering a love for literacy that lasts a lifetime.
Parents play a crucial role in reinforcing these skills outside the classroom. Here are some simple ways to help:
Encourage Daily Writing: Provide opportunities for children to write—whether it’s keeping a journal, writing shopping lists, or sending letters to family members.
Read Together: Reading aloud and discussing stories enhances phonics skills and builds comprehension.
Play Phonics Games: Engaging activities like word searches, rhyming games, and phonics websites make learning fun (starfall.com).
Provide the Right Tools: Using dotted thirds lined paper, a handwriting textbook at home and proper pencils can help improve handwriting control.
By supporting handwriting and phonics development in Year 2, we help children build strong literacy skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond. Let’s continue to nurture these essential abilities and inspire a lifelong love of learning!
Kind regards,
Year 2 Team

Year 3

Term 1 has been filled with learning, growth, and exciting experiences for our Grade 3 students! They have been engaged in a range of academic and personal development activities, strengthening both their knowledge and character.
One of the biggest achievements this term has been seeing students grow in their reading and writing skills. Reading The One and Only Ivan has helped improve fluency and comprehension, with students enjoying open discussions about the novel.
In writing, students have been developing their creative storytelling skills, using descriptive words to bring their ideas to life. Who knows? We may have some future authors in our class!
In Maths, students have been deepening their understanding of numbers through place value. This strong foundation has helped them solve more complex addition and subtraction problems with confidence.
This term, students explored personal challenges—both their own and those of others. Through discussions and activities, they learned how to show empathy and support those facing difficulties, building important life skills.
A major milestone this term was the NAPLAN assessment. Our Grade 3 students worked hard to apply their classroom learning to the computer-based test. With lots of encouragement and teamwork, they tackled the challenge with confidence. We are so proud of their efforts!
As we wrap up Term 1, we are excited for the learning and adventures ahead in Term 2. Thank you for your continued support. We love seeing our students grow every day!
Kind regards,
Year 3 Team
Year 4

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We have recently concluded our Who We Are unit with an enriching visit to the Chinese Museum and Chinatown. The students thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour, exploring both the museum and the surrounding area. Through this experience, they gained a deeper understanding of how the Chinese community preserved their cultural traditions, using Chinatown as a social hub to maintain their identity and foster a sense of belonging. Additionally, students engaged in meaningful discussions about the racial laws of the time, making connections to similar issues around the world. During the excursion students asked questions that prompted deeper understanding of community belonging.
In literacy, we focused on narrative writing, where students explored different language features to develop well-structured and engaging stories. We have now transitioned into exposition writing, where students are learning to craft persuasive arguments. This ties into our new Unit of Inquiry, How We Organize Ourselves, which focuses on non-governmental organizations and access to essential services.
Our Spell X program continues to be a great success, with students enjoying the process of learning and applying spelling rules in an engaging way.
Finally, as we approach this special time of the year, we would like to take a moment to wish everyone an Eid Mubarak!
Kind regards,
Year 4 Team

Year 5

Salams Everyone,
It's been a wonderfully busy and productive term for the year 5 students and we could not have been any more proud of them as they reach the end of their first term as school leaders. This term they have embraced many milestones such as Camp, NAPLAN and Ramadan. They attended the Year 5 Iftar with respect and enthusiasm and embraced this function as part of their faith. Many of the students displayed respect and humility as they waited to break their fast with their friends and teachers. As part of their Unit of Inquiry this term, the year 5 students organised a Clean Up AIA Day!
They unpacked their unit and found out what the school community needed and took action upon this. They made posters and shared them around the school and on the hottest day of the term, took part in cleaning up the school after lunchtime and made it look beautiful and clean for pickup when the parents arrived. Wishing you a wonderful holiday period and looking forward to another wonderful term of embracing learning in Term 2.
Warm Regards,
Ms Amanda
